Using research gained from its developments in the USA and Canada this "flex" building was undertaken on a speculative basis.
The 3,750 sq.m. (40,350 sq.ft.) building has a three-storey office frontage with an 11.0 m. (36 ft.) headroom warehouse/production/research and development facility to the rear. This latter area was designed to provide the occupier with the flexibility to adapt the building to its specific requirements whether they were for production, storage or research and development or a mixture of these uses.
This adaptability was achieved by use of a terracotta tiled cladding, designed with "knock out" panels which could be removed to accommodate windows, louvres and other types of cladding.
Lonza acquired the building at an early stage in its construction and took advantage of its inherent flexibility to create office, laboratory and storage accommodation together with a sophisticated services area at an intermediate level.
This innovative approach was recognised when the building won the Development of the Year Award in 1997.
